George Joseph Irwin, 86, of Toms River, NJ, formerly of Middletown, NJ, died May 9, 2018. George was born August 20, 1931 in Youngwood, PA, son of the late Merle and Jane (Reed) Irwin. He was predeceased by his wife Martha (Werner) after 63 years of marriage. He was known for his dedication to and care of his wife during her long illness, and as a loving husband, father and grandfather.
George graduated from Greensburg (PA) High School in 1949. He later attended Georgia State University, and received an associate degree in accounting from Brookdale Community College. During the Korean War, he served in the US Navy as a radioman at Oceana Naval Air Station, Virginia Beach, VA. He worked for AT&T in telecommunications and network design for 35 years, a career which took him from Cleveland to Cincinnati to Atlanta, and finally to New Jersey in 1969. After retiring from AT &T, he worked as a consultant for SCS Telecom, Advanced Digital Technologies Co. and Sherikon, Inc. He and his wife were founding members of the Middletown Ramblers square dancers, and also enjoyed camping, attending Greensburg High School and family reunions, and traveling throughout the US, Europe and the Caribbean. Cruises to Alaska and the Panama Canal were especially memorable. George was a former Boy Scout Leader in Middletown and actively supported the Eagle Scout projects of his son, Charles and grandson, Sean. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Middletown. He was interested in American history and genealogy. Most recently, he served on the Holiday City West Financial Review Committee for the past 3 years, and enjoyed membership in the Bocce Club and Bowling League.
George is survived by his children and their spouses, John C. Irwin (Karin) of Roxbury, CT, Kathleen M. Irwin of Toms River, George M. Irwin (Linda Purtell) of Pt Monmouth, NJ, Thomas P. Irwin (Carolyn) of Jersey City, NJ and Charles F. Irwin (Ann Schrevens) of Morristown, NJ, and by grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah, Allison, Sean and Darcy Irwin, and many cousins. He was predeceased by his daughter Theresa, and his brother, Thomas.
Family will receive friends on Sunday May 13, 2018 from 2-5pm at the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals, 145 St. Catherine Blvd. Toms River, NJ. A Mass of Christian burial will be offered on Monday May 14, 2018 at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Chapel, 26 Leonardville Rd. Middletown, NJ. Burial will follow to Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Middletown, NJ.
