Lucille Wefer Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Lucille A. Wefer (nee Petersen), 92, of the Silver Ridge Park North section of Berkeley Township, NJ, on Monday, March 25, 2024.

Born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, Lucille grew up in the parish of St. Paul of the Cross. She attended St. Michael’s High School in Union City, NJ where she was on the basketball team. She worked for the telephone company upon graduation, resigning to raise her children. Later, Lucille returned to work as a crossing guard for the Jersey City Police Department for 18 years.

Lucille married the love of her life, Gene, in 1953 and honeymooned at Niagara Falls. She lived in Jersey City for 36 years where she raised her family. Along with her two sisters and brother, Lucille and Gene bought a piece of property in Point Pleasant which had three bungalows on it. It is there she enjoyed her summer months relaxing on the beach and having happy hour on any of the three front porches. Lucille enjoyed taking ballroom dancing lessons with Gene, and loved to show their skills at any event.

Although hard to leave all her friends in Jersey City, Lucille and her husband moved to Berkeley Township in 1988. Even after moving, she remained in close contact with her many friends from their old neighborhood and St. Anne’s parish.

Lucille was a parishioner of St. Maximilian Kolbe RC Church, Berkeley Township, NJ. Being a devoted Catholic, she was a member of the church’s Rosary Altar Society and a charter member of the Catholic Daughters.

Lucille was an avid Mahjong player and formed many strong, lasting friendships over the 30 years of playing. Lucille also played cards every Friday with another group of wonderful women. She was a member of the Silver Ridge Park North Bocce Team, and a member of the Silver Ridge Park North Women’s Club and First Aid Auxiliary. Lucille was also the Queen Mother of a local Red Hat Society Chapter. Lucille enjoyed embroidering, jigsaw puzzles, and reading during her evening hours.

Lucille and Gene loved to travel. They traveled the world together. Because of their love of travel, she became the Trip and Travel Coordinator for Silver Ridge Park North. She ran many trips across the United States, as well as abroad, for close to 20 years, returning from each trip with new friends and new stories.

She was predeceased by her husband and best friend, Eugene Wefer, in 2012, her parents Robert and Mary Petersen, and her siblings Miriam Rooney, Claire Petersen and Robert Petersen.

Lucille is survived by her two children, Richard P. Wefer and his wife Susan of Vernon, NJ and Jean P. Franco and her husband Robert of Monroe, NJ. Lucille is also survived by her five grandchildren, Allison Ryan and her husband Matthew, Daniel Franco, Eric Wefer, Richard J. Wefer and his wife Katharine, and Marc Franco; her two great-grandchildren Claire and Tyler, and several nieces and nephews. Lucille left her family with a legacy of faith, love, and family values which will always be their guide. Her spirit will live on in their hearts and in all their special memories together forever.

Lucille’s life touched so many. She will be forever remembered with love and sadly missed by us all.
